What is SEO?
SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization and is the process of improving your websites organic ranking by the search engines. The process has 3 basic parts: the Technical aspect of SEO deals with your websites crawlability, On-page SEO deals with your sites keyword searchablility and Off-page SEO deals with the websites authority.
Technical
Technical SEO focuses on how well the search engine spiders can crawl and index your websites content. While this aspect doesn’t improve your ranking, it is the foundation for off-page optimization. If the search engines can't crawl (read) your website, other efforts won't yield much in the way of results.
On-Page
On-page SEO primarily deals with the content on your website, how well it is optimized with keywords for your industry and the user experience it provides for visitors. A well optimized web page will use keywords that consumers are searching for in a naturally informative way that doesn't leave the visitor feeling like he or she just read a thesaurus or left empty handed. The key is to give the visitor quality information that either educates them on your products and services or at a minimum lets them know they've clicked on a relevant site.
Off-Page
Off-page SEO is primarily focused on building your websites authority through inbound links from other authoritative websites, blogs and directories back to your website. These natural links from independent and relevant websites act as a vote of confidence, which encourages the search engines to trust and rank your website better. Be cautious when hiring a company to do this, if they promise mass quantities of inbound links immediately I would run. The search engines focus on Quality vs Quantity.
“In search engine optimization (SEO) terminology, whitehat SEO refers to the techniques aim to improve a site by focusing on the visitors instead of on ranking higher. Examples of good, whitehat techniques include creating organic, high-quality content and adding good descriptive tags that completely follow search engine rules and policies.”
